Group Two astronauts as selected in September 1962
NASA Astronaut Group Two: Color Photo Signed on the Mat by All
Nine. A stunning and rare assemblage of signatures on a 15.5" x
16" mat around an 11" x 14" photo of the "New Nine" or "Next Nine,"
the first new group of astronauts chosen by NASA after the original
"Mercury Seven." The Gemini Program had been announced and this
second group was chosen to face new and more technical challenges;
four of the nine had advanced engineering degrees. This photo,
taken by a LIFE Magazine photographer for an upcoming issue,
depicts them wearing NASA training flight suits and gathered around
a model of the two-man Gemini capsule; they are all are looking at
the camera and smiling. Signed as follows: "Neil Armstrong",
"Edward H. White II", "Elliot See" (at left),
"Frank Borman", "John Young", "Thomas P.
Stafford", (at right), "James Lovell", "James A.
McDivitt", and "Charles Conrad Jr" (at bottom). All the
signatures are in black ink and are clear and not faded. The photo
itself is a bit faded as usually seen but could easily be replaced
as the signatures are on the mat, not the photo. There is a
horizontal crease affecting no signatures but going through the
heads of Lovell, McDivitt, and Conrad. Overall very good.This is an amazing group of American heroes and includes the first man on the moon (three moonwalkers total), the first American to walk in space, the commander of the first mission to the moon, and the commander of the first shuttle mission. The "New Nine" signed very few items as a group due to their busy schedules and, as Eliot See died in an early-1966 training accident, none could be obtained after that. A previous owner of this piece claims that it came from Ed White's collection. We cannot verify that.
