Description
Apollo 11 Crew-Signed Ultra-Rare "Type Two" Insurance Cover with Dow-Unicover Cachet, also with the Apollo 11 25th Anniversary Stamp and Pictorial Cancellation [with] Color Photos. A philatelic cover bearing a 6¢ "Apollo 8" stamp (Scott #1371) affixed just below a pictorial machine cancellation from Kennedy Space Center dated July 16, 1969, the day that Apollo 11 was launched. This example features a cachet at left depicting astronaut portraits and the legend "Apollo XI - The First Step - First Manned Lunar Landing" with additional artwork in blue showing an astronaut stepping onto the lunar surface. It is boldly signed in blue felt tip pens: "Neil Armstrong", "Michael Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin". These signatures remain strong and vibrant, well-placed across the face of the cover. Included, for purposes of display or matting, are two seldom-seen glossy 10" x 8" color prints of the crew, one in flight suits, the other in white spacesuits. Excellent. On top of the cachet is affixed a 29¢ "First Moon Landing" stamp with an Apollo 11 25th Anniversary hand cancelation from Kennedy Space Center on July 20, 1994, the anniversary of the first manned moonlanding. This is a later philatelic addition to the cover and it, in no way, affects the original 1969 hand signings or the extreme rarity of the cover.
These covers, left behind with their families prior to launch, were created as a form of "life insurance," since commercial coverage was unavailable for astronauts at the time. In the event of a tragedy, the autographed covers could be sold to provide financial security.
Insurance covers from Apollo 11 are the most coveted of the series, representing the very first lunar landing mission. The Type Two variant, identifiable by its Dow/Unicover cachet, is the scarcest design of the three (by far, in our experience) and highly prized in the philatelic and space autograph communities. This particular example has been off the market since 2006. Don't miss out! From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke
