Description

Flown supersonically by Yeager on the fiftieth anniversary of him breaking of the sound barrier

Chuck Yeager Signed and Numbered (#5/8) Vintage Bell X-1 Mach Meter Flown to Mach 1 in 1997. The needle on the dial of this vintage 3.5" diameter Type A-1 machmeter made by Burton Manufacturing, serial number AF55-1621, is at Mach 1.0 and is signed in silver felt tip: "Chuck Yeager/ 5-8". On October 14, 1947, Yeager was the first to fly at the speed of sound in a Bell X-1. Exactly fifty years later he repeated the feat in an AFB F-15, carrying a group of thirty-one of these meter faces signed in gold and only eight signed in silver. They were offered by the History Office and Flight Test Historical Foundation at Edwards AFB and sold out immediately. Most are firmly ensconced in private collections as they rarely are offered in the aftermarket. This is the first Heritage Auctions has encountered and is of the smaller edition of eight signed in silver. A rare opportunity. Light wear commensurate with age, fine.
