Description
George McCadden, Battery D, 1st Maryland Light Artillery: Great Group of Personally-Owned Items. McCadden initially served with Battery A of the 2d Maryland Light Arty from 7/6/63 to 1/19/64 and subsequently served with the 1st Maryland Light Artillery from 2/29/64 to 6/24/65. The group includes the following: very nice 1/9 plate ambrotype of McCadden wearing artillery shell jacket and forage cap in half case; set of brass shoulder scales complete with the shoulder attachments for the coat and the end tab from the original box with a paper label, "One Pair / Shoulder Scales / Horstmann" . The scales are also marked on the underside "Horstmann / Philadelphia". Really as fine a set as we've ever seen.; period tin snuff box with embossed rays on the top.; piece of hardtack with ink printed provenance, doubtless applied by McCadden, Souvenier (sic) of Fort Howard / 1st Regt / Md". There is additional information but chips on the surface have made part of the inscription illegible, although the hardtack is in good sound condition; unique in our experience, a collapsible silver or silver plated cup with the original japanned tin storage case. 3 1/4" high when opened with knurled decoration and a panel on the top section which is inscribed in script, "G. McCadden / Co./ D". Absolutely period and the piece is totally untouched with very nice patina; two documents related to McCadden. One a certificate for $75 in bounty money dated 19 August 1864 and the other, dated June 29, 1865 and July 5, giving him his final pay and mustering out. Great group with impeccable ID.Auction Info
