Description

Thor Heyerdahl Signed First Day Cover. First Day Cover, 6" x 3" (sight), Tahiti; postmarked August 28, [19]47. First-day cover commemorating the success of the Kon-Tiki Expedition, signed by Heyerdahl and the five members of his crew. On April 28, 1947, Heyerdahl set sail from Callao, Peru in a raft for Tahiti. Heyerdahl believed that pre-Columbian Incans could have sailed to Polynesia and wanted to test his theory by recreating the journey. Although Heyerdahl and his crew made it to French Polynesia, they first crashed on an uninhabited islet off Raroia atoll, hours away from Tahiti. They were found by nearby islanders and continued on to their final destination where the expedition was celebrated as a success. Matted and framed with a facsimile reproduction of the front of the cover to an overall size of 10" x 11.5".

Condition: Toned on verso and minor staining throughout. Pencil notations on recto. The frame has a minor scuff on the left side. Not examined outside of the frame.
