Description
An Approximately 2" Square Piece of the Fort Sumter Storm Flag With a Presentation Note From Peter Hart Who Was Present at the Bombardment. The tableau is framed and doubled-matted under glass to an overall size of 20.5" x 16.5". Perhaps the best way to introduce Sergeant Peter Hart is from a speech put into New York's Congressional Record on the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War: "Sergeant Hart will be remembered for valiantly leaving New York to join in the defense of Fort Sumter in January, 1861. Major Robert Anderson, Commander of Fort Sumter, had served with him in the Mexican American War. As tensions between the North and South increased, Major Anderson's wife requested Sergeant Hart join the defense of Fort Sumter. Early in the morning of April 12, 1861 the first shots of the American Civil War rang out. By afternoon the shelling had knocked the American flag from the flagstaff flying over the fort. Sergeant Hart proudly retrieved the fallen flag, climbed up the flagstaff and successfully reattached it. His refusal to allow the flag to lie torn and tattered serves as a symbol of the unwavering spirit of all Americans who defend our Nation in the Civil War".This incredible lot includes a small 2" x 2" section of the Sumter flag accompanied by a note written by Hart which reads in full: "New York/ Sept. 28th 1886 / Mr. J. S. Reigart / Passaic / N. J. / This piece of flag is / from the original Storm / flag of Fort Sumter S.C. / April 12 & 13, 1861. / Yours Truly / Peter Hart". The flag and autograph note have been archivally framed along with rare cartes de visite of both "Sgt. Hart of Fort Sumter" and Maj. Robert Anderson in his early/pre-war uniform with overcoat on the table at his side. A most impressive historical grouping, attractively displayed and sure to be the centerpiece of any collection.
