Description

Invitations for the Social Elite of the Nation's Capital. Group of thirty-three engraved cards, invitations, and written notes reflecting the social life in Washington, D.C. in the years 1865-1875. The senders were prominent in Washington society and include senators, congressmen, cabinet members, governors, diplomats, and generals. The highlights include: a large card for "General & Mrs. Grant", five additional cards for members of President Johnson's Cabinet, a ball for the Russian Grand Duke Alexis where Albert Bierstadt is listed as a manager, an ALS from Kate Chase Sprague (Mary Todd Lincoln's social rival), a party for the Chinese Legation, military soirees, etc. All removed from an album with glue and paper remnants on the verso.
