Description

Fort Sumter Flag Raising and Major Robert Anderson Group. Nice group of ephemera related to Fort Sumter and its commander, Major Robert Anderson. It includes a bold and resonant Anthony/Brady CDV of Anderson, a clipped signature on blue paper inscribed: "New York Apl 14, 1865/ Robert Anderson/ Major Genl, by brevet", an Anthony stereo view titled on the reverse label: "War Views. Interior of Fort Sumpter [sic], Charleston Harbor, S. C. April 14th, 1865. Arrival of Gen. Anderson and the Guests to inaugurate the ceremony of raising the old Flag." (inconsequential scattered white mottling or spotting visible upon magnification), and a 5" x 8" 4-page souvenir program for the April 14, 1865 event. Per the title of the program, this took place four years to-the-day after the surrender of the fort and the inauguration of civil war. The same flag that was hauled down in 1861 was raised above the ruins of the fort. Anderson and Henry Ward Beecher were featured guests and speakers. Ironically, President Lincoln was assassinated the very same day. The rare program is in great condition with normal folds.
