Description

Samuel Coleman Autograph Album with Watercolors and Autograph Manuscript by Peter Jones. Forty-one pages bound in red Morocco with gold stamping to edges, boards, and spine, 5" x 8.25, Bristol; March 2, 1827, to August 29, 1836. Signed, "S. Coleman." The autograph manuscript by Jones discusses Christianization efforts amongst indigenous communities in Canada and is dual signed, "Peter Jones" and "Kahkewaquonaby."

Best known for his portraits and biblical scenes, Coleman spent the majority of his career in Bristol, England. He was a notable Nonconformist Protestant and his beliefs were central to his artistic productions. Coleman's works often exhibited extreme detail and apocalyptic scenes. His perhaps most famous painting is The Edge of Doom (1836), which depicts the destruction of Western civilization. This album features two watercolors and one sketch by Coleman. The first watercolor depicts a painting palette in front of a tree while the second work and the sketch portray Thornbury Castle in Bristol. The album also includes a floral watercolor by painter William Henry Fisk.

In addition to Coleman's signature, the album features an autograph manuscript by missionary Peter Jones signed in English and Ojibwe. Born to a Welsh father and a Mississauga Ojibwa mother, Jones spent his early years with his mother's Mississauga band in southern Ontario. At the age of fourteen, he went to live with his white Christian father in Upper Canada to learn English and European customs. He became a notable preacher and missionary, using his indigenous heritage to translate hymns and biblical texts into both Ojibwe and Mohawk. Jones rose to prominence in North America and drew thousands to his sermons. He played an active role in Canadian politics where he advocated for the Christianization of First Nations communities throughout Canada.

On May 31, 1831, Jones writes, in part, "There are in Upper Canada about 1200 Indians belonging to the Methodist Society - 15 Schools of about 450 children learning to read and write in English. This great work of Grace, among my people, commenced eight years ago. The Great Spirit has done great things for poor Indians in Canada whereof our hearts are made very glad. But O the thousands who are yet destitute of this good Religion, which Jesus wants all the red men of the woods to feel in their hearts! When will the time come, where Jesus shall have the heathen for his inheritance and the nethermost parts of the Earth for his possession?" The preacher also includes a short list of Chippewa terms translated into English.

There is an autograph dated in the year 1890, likely collected by the next owner of the book as Colman died in 1845.

Condition: Corners bumped and spine slightly scuffed at the head and tail. Text block slightly shaken and edges warped. Intermittent staining and toning throughout. Covers soiled with first end paper split.
