Description
Albert Einstein Typed Letter Signed. One page, 8.25" x 10.75" (sight), no place; [circa 1931-1932]. Typed letter, in German, with English translation mounted separately within the frame. It was typed up by Dr. Fritz Bamberger in order to solicit funds for the Academy for the Science of Judaism in Berlin. The institution had fallen into financial difficulties due to the political climate of the time and Einstein agreed to lend his signature to the appeal for funds. Unfortunately for the Academy, he had made a promise to his wife, Elsa, to cease lending his name to solicitations and later asked that the letters not be mailed. It would close in 1934 following Hitler's rise to power. It reads in part:"This worthy Institution...is close to being ruined. Distressed conditions have long forced great economizing, but today, the number of academic positions and salaries is so reduced that any further reduction would dissolve the Academy. This would be a great irreparable loss for the intellectual representation of Judaism. What was achieved at the Academy...would be nearly impossible to recreate...I therefore, beg of you, whoever is in the position, do whatever is in your power to help this outstanding Institution." Matted and framed along with an English translation, placard, and black and white photograph of Einstein to the overall size of 34" x 30". Not examined outside of the frame.
Condition: Light age toning with smoothed creases.
