Description

Lizzie Borden Autograph Letter Signed "Neighbor's." Two pages of a bifolium, 5" x 8", Fall River, Massachusetts; October 15, 1896. In a short letter to her neighbor, James Kenney, Borden voices her complaints about Kenney's dog. It reads in full: "Several of your neighbors have been very much annoyed by your dog all summer, and feel they can bear it no longer. Will you please get rid of him or keep him in the house all the time. If you are not willing to comply with this request they will feel obliged to complain to the city authorities. No man has any right to keep a nuisance."

Although acquitted of the murders of her father and step mother, Lizzie Borden was still viewed by many in the community as the prime suspect in their deaths. She was highly disliked by her neighbors, who often complained of her throwing loud parties, entertaining guests into the early hours of the morning, and making her own complaints about neighbors. Borden was particularly antagonistic towards James Kenney, as seen in this letter. The following year she bought the lot upon which his house and garage were built, ultimately forcing him to move.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with small holes and tears at the folds where paper was weakened. Light soiling throughout. The letter is separated at the fold on page 3 and 4, not affecting any of the text.
