Description

[Republic of Texas]. Mirabeau Lamar $100 Government Bond Signed. One page, 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches (sight), "Treasury Department," Austin, Texas; October 1, 1840. Framed to an overall size of 14 x 12 inches. Bond "No. 532" for one hundred dollars at eight percent interest per annum, made out to Charles DeMorse. Signed, "Mirabeau B. Lamar" as President. With ten coupons and several cut cancellations. Decorated with four engraved vignettes including two of cattle, a steamboat bearing the Lone Star flag, and an allegorical figure of Industry.

Lamar was elected as the second president of the Republic of Texas, taking office in 1838 following his term as vice president under Sam Houston. He is widely known for his significant contributions to education, often referred to as the "Father of Education in Texas."

DeMorse was the young republic's stock commissioner under Mirabeau Lamar, tasked with attempting to fund and bond the public debt. After serving in the Civil War, DeMorse helped organize the Democratic Party in Texas, earning his own title: "Father of the Texas Democratic Press."

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Moderately toned with several closed cut cancellations, not affecting Lamar's signature.
