Description

[Revolutionary War Newspaper]. The Pennsylvania Packet. Four pages, 10 x 16 inches. Philadelphia: John Dunlap. August 1, 1780. Unpaginated and printed in three columns. This issue includes a proclamation on page two, ordering "the Brigadiers and Superintendents of the several counties of this state" to raise troops and supplies according to General Washington's orders.

There is also an account of the Battle of Bull's Ferry in July of 1780, on page three. It reads, in part: "General Wayne having disposed of his troops in such a manner as to guard the different landing places on the Bergen shore, upon which the enemy might throw over troops from York Island to intercept his retreat....for some tried the effect of his field pieces upon it, but thought the fire was kept up for an hour, they found to light to penetrate...the troops, during this time...rushed through the abattis to the foot of the blockade...This act of intemperate valour was the cause of the loss we sustained, and which amounted to the whole to three officers wounded, 15 non commissioned and privates killed, and 46 non-commissioned and privates wounded."

Page four contains a list of deserters from the Continental Army.

Condition: Heavily toned with smoothed folds & crease at center; edgewear. Legibility good.
