Description
Lyonel Feininger Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 6.75" x 10.75", Dessau; July 4, 1928. Untranslated letter in German granting the recipient permission to use his painting, "Gelmeroda IX," to illustrate her essay. He also requests a copy of the book once it has been published. Signed, "Lyonel Feininger."A vanguard of the Expressionist movement, Lyonel Feininger was born in New York City. At the age of sixteen, he traveled to Germany to study art and initially focused on cartoons. For the first two decades of his career, Feininger worked as a caricaturist for multiple German and American magazines. At the turn of the twentieth century, Feininger fell in with several German expressionist groups, inspiring him to transition into fine art. Though he found success in Germany, he ultimately returned to the United States in 1936 after the Nazi Party labeled his work "degenerate."
While Feininger's earlier works explored the human experience, his later works like the one mentioned here focused on urban structures. In particular, the church of Gelmeroda outside of Weimar, Germany was one of the artist's favorite subjects. Between 1906 and 1936, Feininger created a series of paintings depicting the Gothic cathedral in various lights. Feininger utilized a combination of Cubist and Italian Futurist methods to create angular, sharp representations of the church.
Condition: Creased along folds. Staining and foxing throughout, affecting text but not signature. Pencil annotations have been erased on verso at top.
