Description

Gaetano Donizetti Autograph Letter Signed "Donizetti." One page, 7 x 9 ¼ inches (sight); no place; no date. A letter in Italian adding and unsigned postscript. He writes, "Whom shall I recommend? The usual! Not too frequent for me, and most frequent in your house, on which a thousand recommended people rain down every year; where I, too, rained in 1821. Signora Luigia Schironi is bringing you this! Should I tell you who she is - you know it already... you have read her praises a thousand times... you can see from the Roman theater posters, and from everything said above..." He adds in a postscript, "Recommend her to all of my fans, and thanks!" A previous catalog description states that the recipient is Giacomo Ferretti, a noted poet and opera librettist. Ferretti wrote the libretto for Donizetti's opera Zoraida di Granata, which premiered in January 1822, and it may be that collaboration that Donizetti is referencing when he writes, "where I, too, rained in 1821." Matted and framed with an engraving of the composer to an overall size of 19 ¾ x 15 ¾ inches.

Condition: Light ink transfer and smudging in a few areas, with flattened folds. Not examined out of the frame.

Provenance: Kenneth W. Rendell Gallery. Estate of Ernest Henry Seelhorst; Brenham, Texas.
