Description

George Clinton Land Grant Signed. One partially printed page, 18 1/4 x 11 1/4 inches (sight); City of New York; July 6, 1790. A document granting "...unto John Cole... in the County of Montgomery and in the Township of Cato... Lot number Twenty, Containing Six hundred acres..." Signed, "Geo. Clinton" and countersigned by Lewis A. Scott as Secretary. Retains the original 3 1/2 inch paper covered wax seal of the state of New York affixed with a ribbon.

Document is endorsed on verso by William J. Kedenburgh, stating that a "...sum of Thirty Pounds current money of the State of New York to me in hand paid by Samuel Meredith Do hereby convey sett over transfer Suit claim and assign unto him heirs and assigns for ever all my right with interest property claim and demand of in and to the within mentioned...Six hundred Acres of Land..." Matted and framed in a double glazed custom frame to an overall size of 25 3/4 x 21 1/2 inches. Not examined outside of frame.

George Clinton, an American soldier, served as Governor of New York (1777-1795, 1801-1804) and Jefferson and Madison's Vice President from 1805 until his death in 1812. The seal was commissioned by George Clinton and designed by John Jay, Gouverneur Morris, and John Sloss Hobart. The obverse of the seal pictures the sun rising over the Hudson Highlands and the river in the foreground and a riband below with the motto "Excelsior". The reverse shows a tall ragged rock rising out of a turbulent sea with the motto "Frustra" above and "1777" below.

Condition: Flattened folds, scattered stains, and overall toning with darker toning along folds. Almost complete separation to center horizontal fold, affecting text, and reinforced on verso with paper, just touching docket. Areas of separation and wear along the intersections of the lower horizontal fold where document is folded upward for the seal and signature, as well as a pinhole at top right fold intersection. Frame was originally designed to open, but hanging chains have since been added along the hinge, causing the frame to stay sealed. Frame is in good condition with some loss to gold paint, scattered scuffs, and some chipping
