Description
Abraham Lincoln Military Commission Signed "Abraham Lincoln." One vellum page, partially printed, 13.25" x 19", Washington, D.C.; July 9, 1864. Appointing "William A. Elderkin...Commissary of Substance with the rank of Captain in the service of the United States..." With handsome engraved military and patriotic vignettes and countersigned by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War. With the blue seal of the War Office and docketing in the upper left. The appointment from Lincoln was not the first interaction that Elderkin had with the President. As a West Point graduate, he was sent almost immediately to the front after the fall of Fort Sumter. However, he was forced to leave his fiancé, Fanny Gurley, without the opportunity to say goodbye. Fanny was the daughter of Dr. Phineas Gurley, a close friend of Lincoln. After hearing of his friend's daughter's sorrows, Lincoln dispatched an order to Elderkin's unit, granting the young soldier a three-day furlough so that he could get married before going off to war. Lincoln even attended the couple's wedding. Elderkin survived the war and went on to serve a total of 37 years in the Army before retiring in 1898.
Condition: Smoothed folds with light uneven toning. Creasing to the paper seal and warping at the upper edge of the document. Mounting material along the top edge on verso. Lincoln's signature is very bold.
