Description
Henry III Document Signed. One sheet of vellum, 13 x 8 inches, no place; [1573 - 1575]. Untranslated document signed "Henry" as King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania. As the fourth son of King Henri II of France, Henry III was never destined for the French throne. As was tradition for younger sons, Henry III instead turned to a military career. In September 1573, he was elected monarch of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by the Polish nobility after he offered French military assistance against Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Henry arrived in Poland in January 1574 and was coronated the next month. His reign was short-lived, however, as Henry returned to Paris just four months later to ascend the French throne following his brother's unexpected death.Condition: Creased along folds. Dark toning along top edge, which has a diagonal cut. Small amounts of loss of vellum along the left margin well away from any text. Top right corner is creased.
