Description

[H.C. Bridgewater]. Silver Trophy Presented to Captain John Manderson with Lithograph of the H.C. Bridgewater. Sterling silver .925 urn form trophy on a circular foot made by William Bateman II, 11 x 11 x 15 inches, [circa 1830]. Accompanied by a hand-colored lithograph titled "The H.C. SHIP BRIDGEWATER Capt.n J.R. Manderson, entering Madras Roads, April 10th 1830, under Jury Masts, after the Gales on the 7th of March." The print is matted and framed to an overall size of 28 x 22 inches.

One of the British East India Company's ships, the Bridgewater made eight voyages to China and India on behalf of the trading company. In the spring of 1830, the ship was returning to Britain on what would have been her ninth voyage when she sailed into a hurricane. Between March 5 and 8, 1830, the storm inflicted severe damage, including dismasting the Bridgewater. In an attempt to ameliorate the precarious state of the ship, Captain John Manderson ordered the crew to throw off a total of nineteen guns and fifty chests of tea. Manderson successfully maneuvered the ship to Calcutta, where she was evaluated and condemned. This trophy, presented by the ship's owners, commends Manderson's leadership and skill in protecting the lives of his sailors. The lithograph depicts Manderson arriving in Calcutta. The mast is askew and local harbor workers help haul the anchor.

Condition: Silver tarnished. Lithograph very lightly toned and not examined outside of the frame. Frame very lightly scuffed.
