Description
Union Soldier Letter Regarding Deserters and Runaway Slaves. Four pages of a bifolium, 4.75" x 7.75", Newbern, North Carolina; January 15, 1865. A letter from an unnamed Union soldier, addressed to his parents. He writes, in part: "Writing this I am seated at a window of my quarters, 2nd story looking out upon the smooth Roanoke River. 3 gun boats & 3 schooners lay anchor in the River within gun shot of me. All seems quiet & has ben for a long time...Deserters from the Rebel army often come in here. Nigers running from their masters come in here every day. One come in yesterday that had bin hid in the swamp most a year. Nights he stold enough to live [illegible] their masters can't tuch them non when in our lines. We have one man in the guard house on suspicion of being concerned in the Deth of Giles, a man who had made himself famous in robing the Secesh & fetching his plunder here to Government. One of our Co, went with him & also came near losing his life..."Condition: Flattened mail folds, light toning at the edges and fold. Overall good.
