Description

Martin Van Buren Autograph Letter Signed with Free Frank Signature. Four pages of a bifolium, 5" x 8", Lindenwald [New York]; August 23, 1861. Addressed to a Mrs. Paige. In this letter he thanks Mrs. Paige for the care of his son while he was ill, speaks of her husband, and discusses his own poor health. It reads in part: "I...make my grateful acknowledgement for the kindness you & your good mother...have shown to my very sick son...I should forever feel myself largely indelicate for that great...interference in the matter. Our letters prove this are in the highest degree encouraging & I allow myself to hope for much from...your good husband...My own health has not been quite as good as I expect and when I left you, but I have reason to hope for an improvement." Includes the original transmittal cover with his free frank. Signed, "M Van Buren."

Condition: Smoothed folds. Lightly rubbed with some ink transference.
