Description

Andrew Jackson Signed Military Appointment. One partially printed page of vellum, 13.5" x 16.5", City of Washington; August 1, 1832. The document appoints "Miner Knowlton...Second Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Artillery in the service of the United States." Signed, "Andrew Jackson." Countersigned by Lewis Cass as Secretary of War. With docketing and embossed paper seal at the top left. Patriotic vignettes at the top and bottom margins.

Captain Miner Knowlton was a classmate of General Robert E. Lee at West Point Academy. He taught mathematics, cavalry, and artillery tactics at West Point for a period of time before serving as an aide-de-camp to French Army Marshal Thomas-Robert Bugeaud in Africa. Upon returning to the U.S., he fought in the Mexican War under Zachary Taylor. After his retirement in 1861, he moved to New Jersey and became a prominent member in the city of Burlington. When the Civil War broke out, he helped with recruitment in Burlington and published a manual for raising such volunteer regiments for the Union, entitled "Instructions and Regulations for the Militia and Volunteers of the United States." He passed away at the age of 66 and is buried in Burlington.

Condition: Top edge uneven. Small pinhole to one fold. Smoothed folds with light creasing. Gently toned from age.
