Description

Abraham Lincoln Appointment Signed "Abraham Lincoln". One partially printed page, 16.25" x 13.25" (sight), Washington, D.C.; March 28, 1861. Lincoln nominates and appoints "John W. North, of Minnesota, to be Surveyor General of the United States for the territory of Nevada" during the term of four years. Signed by Lincoln just twenty-four days after his inauguration. Countersigned by Interior Secretary Caleb. B. Smith. With a blind embossed seal of the United States at the lower left. Matted framed to the overall size of 28" x 25.5".

John W. North was the founder of Northfield, Minnesota, famous for the 1876 ill-fated robbery attempt of the First National Bank by the James-Younger Gang. He also founded the city of Riverside, California, where the first orange trees were introduced into the state.

Condition: Flattened folds, with minor wear. Clear signature.
