Description
George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen Printed Circular Signed. One page, 8" x 13"Foreign Office, [London]; April 30, 1843
A printed circular signed "Aberdeen" as Secretary of Foreign Affairs forwarding copies (not present) of a treaty between Great Britain and Chile to suppress the slave trade. Addressed in manuscript on the verso to "Edmond Molyneux Esq. &c. &c. &c".
The circular reads: "I herewith transmit to you for your Information a Copy of a Treaty concluded at Santiago on the 19th of January 1839, and of an additional and explanatory Convention concluded at Santiago on the 7th of August 1841, between Her Majesty and the Republick of Chile, for the Abolition of the Slave Trade..."
Parliament passed the British Slavery Abolition Act in 1833, which ended slavery in most of the empire. By 1843, Parliament eliminated slavery in all of its holdings without exceptions and concluded treaties to combat the slave trade with Mexico, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Chile.
Condition: Mild showthrough from docket on verso. Bit of dampstaining along left margin, and a few traces of tape not affecting any text at bottom and on verso. With flattened folds.
