Description

Hetty Green Signed Stock Certificate. One page, 15.25" x 7.75", Minnesota; May 10, 1887. Saint Paul & Duluth Railroad Company stock certificate No. 7695, with ornate vignettes at top edge, issuing 100 shares to "Hettie H. R. Green." Signed on verso, "Hetty H. R. Green."

Hetty Green (1834-1916), nicknamed the "Witch of Wall Street," was more affluent, and cheaper, than any other woman of her day. A brilliant operator in the Stock Exchange, her chief business in Wall Street was confined to the lending of money. Her native shrewdness, intensified by single-handed combat with the financial powers of her time, steeled her personality for conflict and earned her a reputation for miserliness. She dressed shabbily, haggled over petty purchases, sought free medical treatment at charity clinics, and carried a gun - "mostly," she said, "to protect myself against lawyers." However, her life's work was money: she was the country's leading purchaser of mortgages and railroad stocks. Here is a fine example of the "Witch" at work.

Condition: A few small smudges to Green's signature. Lightly soiled and toned. Four small hole punches on left edge.
