Description
Zachary Taylor Appointment Signed as President. One partially printed page, 15 1/2 x 11 3/8 inches; City of Washington; June 11, 1849. Newly inaugurated Taylor appoints "Hercules R. W. Andrews of Florida, Register of the Land Office for the District of Lands subject to sale at Tallahassee, in the State of Florida." Signed, "Z. Taylor" as President and countersigned by Thomas Ewing as Secretary of the Interior. Blind embossed seal at lower left.Issued within the first months of Zachary Taylor's administration, this appointment sits squarely in a pivotal moment of federal reorganization and postwar expansion. With the nation still absorbing the territorial gains of the Mexican American War and the new Department of the Interior only just established, the document reflects the government's effort to formalize civil administration across its geographical holdings.
Condition: Minor toning with flattened folds. Areas of separation along center fold, with reinforcements at both top and bottom margins. Minor creasing to areas along the outer margins with a few spots of minor soiling. Pinhole at center intersection. Mounting remnants along right margin of verso, with minor dampstaining at the corner margins.
