Description

General Douglas MacArthur Two Autograph Letters Signed and Drawing.
1) Two-pages of a bifolium, 6.5" x 8.75", Office of the Military Advisor, Manila, Philippines, (circa 1935). On Commonwealth of the Philippines Office of Military Advisor stationary, to Babe Fairchild concerning a party invitation from Fairchild and her mother: "Dear Babe: How very nice of you and your Mother to want me to come to your party Saturday night. I am sure it would be a real delight. But I am still suffering the depression of my Mother's tragedy and have not as yet been able to muster the sufficient fortitude to face the world socially. I would be poor company indeed. Thank you again, though, dear Babe, and may it not be too long before I see your glamourous self again. Cordially, Douglas MacArthur." At the time this letter was written, MacArthur was serving as military advisor to President Manuel Quezon, President of the Philippines, who appointed MacArthur Field Marshal of the Philippine Army.

2) One-page, 6.5" x 8.5" drawing, ink over pencil, by MacArthur on Commonwealth of the Philippines Office of the Military Advisor stationary, [circa 1935-37]. Drawing of a woman under the title "Bellisima Triguena!! !!Imagen del Candor!!" ["Beautiful brunette!! !!Image candor!!"]. Surrounding the drawing of the woman are three words: "Animal!", "Cochon!!", and Salaud!!" Cochon is a French word meaning pig or swine, Saluad is a French word for bastard. On the third page of bifolium is the phrase "demain six heures chez ton pére" [Tomorrow at six go to the home of your father]. On the fourth page of the bifolium is the phrase "Je n'y manquerai pas" [I shall do so]. Presumably MacArthur sent this to Fairchild. It is unknown if the drawing is supposed to be of Fairchild and the meaning of the messages in French.

The letter and drawing are accompanied by a Commonwealth of the Philippines Office of the Military Advisor envelope addressed to Fairchild in the hand of MacArthur.

3) Two-pages of a bifolium, 6" x 8", Headquarters Philippine Department, United States Army, Manila, August 27, [circa 1941]. A letter, on Headquarters Philippine Department, United States Army, Office of the Commanding General stationary, to Babe Fairchild, concerning an invitation to MacArthur. Dear 'Bébé'- Thank you so much for your nice invitation for next Sunday. I am so sorry I will be unable to come as I already accepted a luncheon engagement for that day before receiving your note. It was thoughtful of you to ask me and I appreciate it. With cordial regard / Faithfully MacArthur."

MacArthur had retired from the U.S. Army in 1937 to become military advisor to the Philippine government. He was recalled to active service in 1941 as commander of U.S. forces in the Far East.
We have been unable to identify Babe Fairchild. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: The letters and the drawing are in fine condition.
