Description

Thomas Jefferson Handwritten Check Signed While Secretary of State. One partially printed check, 6.75" x 2.5" (sight), no place; July 6, 1792. "Bank of the United States" check made out to "Messrs. Herbst & Lex or Bearer" for "sixty nine dollars and fifty cents of Dollars." Boldly signed, "Th: Jefferson."

In 1792, Jefferson was in his second year as the first, and somewhat reluctant, United States secretary of state under President George Washington. He spent most of his time at odds with Alexander Hamilton, Washington's former aide-de-camp and current secretary of the treasury, and his pro-British, Federalist policies promoting the founding of banks and cities and a strong, centralized government. Jefferson was himself pro-French and a founder of the Democratic-Republicans who opposed the creation of banks and promoted an agrarian lifestyle. Jefferson ran unsuccessfully as the Republican candidate for the 1796 election, but was defeated by friend and Federalist, John Adams. The check is attractively matted and framed to the overall size of 14" x 9.75". Not examined outside of the frame. It is accompanied by a modern printed portrait of Jefferson measuring 16" x 24". From the Joel Levin Collection.

Condition: Cross punch canceled near lower edge. Light, uneven toning.
