Known as the "Father of the Neutron Bomb," physicist Samuel Cohen is perhaps best remembered for his participation in the Oppenheimer Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. Cohen produced several critical calculations on the behavior of neutrons in the Fat Man bomb that was detonated over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, thereby effectively ending World War II. After the war's conclusion, Cohen served as an unofficial advisor for many U.S. presidents. Cohen also joined the RAND Corporation, where he designed the Neutron Bomb, a low yield thermonuclear weapon, in 1958. Cohen hailed his discovery as the solution to the Vietnam War and relentlessly promoted the bomb for several decades. Although President Carter declined to authorize their production, President Reagan commissioned 700 neutron bombs. They were later decommissioned by President George H.W. Bush. Ironically, Cohen received a Medal of Peace from Pope John Paul II in 1979 for his work on nuclear bombs.

Throughout his long and controversial career, Cohen typed many of his calculations on this typewriter. Following Cohen's death in 2010, his wife Margaret donated this typewriter to The Collection. Accompanied by related ephemera.
