Description

Confederate and Union Letters. Pair of letters written in pencil, one on ruled bifolium stationery and the other on a page from a South Carolina ledger or birth registry for 1861. 1) 4-page letter, Brownsville, Kentucky, October 12, 1861 written by an unnamed Confederate soldier to his father. "The people in this place are strongly Union & Lincoln... there is a difference between a Kentucky Union man & a Lincoln or an abolitionist; the former is a neutrality man, dont want to fight but if he has to fight will fight for the South, the others, as there names signify, are abolitionist in the strictest terms." One of his men got shot at while watering his horse, prompting him to empty his six-shooter. The troops quickly got into battle formation, but no attack was forthcoming. They raised the Confederate flag after the local citizens voluntarily took down the Stars & Stripes. "There was no shouting when it fell... " Minor insect damage to lower right corner. 2) 2-page letter, Beaufort, Port Royal, North Carolina, December 10 [n.y.], written by an unnamed soldier to his father. "Some of the officers were a little worse of whisky..." He mentions going into a house, breaking open a night stand and finding "splendid razors and trinkets." Later on, they came under some musket fire, but did not return fire, slipping into the brushes while their Captain "went out by himself to see if he could make out what they were doing." Incomplete, generally legible, but hard to decipher in spots.
