Description

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison Land Grant Signed. One partially-printed page of vellum, 12" x 10", City of Washington; May 28, 1804. A document granting "Hezekiah Morton, a Captain in the late army of the United States...Three certain tracts of land estimated to contain each, One Hundred acres...". It was awarded to veterans due to "the act of Congress passed on the first day of June 1795, entitled 'An Act regulating 'the grants of Land appropriated for Military Services, and for the Society of the United Brethren for propagating the gospel 'among the heathen'. Signed by Jefferson as president, "Th: Jefferson." Countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State. With embossed paper seal at lower left. The verso contains a map in ink of land surveyed that relates to Morton's grant.

Condition: Signatures a bit light. One corner creased. 1" tear to seal. Flattened folds with soiling and toning.
