Scarce Autograph Note from President Kennedy on White House Stationery

John F. Kennedy Autograph Note Draft as President. Two pages on one leaf, 8.75 x 6.75 inches (224 x 171 mm), [Washington D.C.], pale green White House stationery; no date. A brief drafted note to Evangeline Bruce, wife of the United States Ambassador to Great Britain, David K. E. Bruce. The note reads in President Kennedy's iconic large scrawl: "Dear Evangeline: Thank you for your thoughtful note. I am not aware that the situation we discussed is anything but satisfactory. I would appreciate your continuing to give it thought. Cordially."

David K. E. Bruce (1898-1977) was one of the most influential American diplomats of the 20th century; among a lifetime of accomplishments, Bruce served as Ambassador to France, West Germany, Great Britain, and NATO, envoy to the Paris peace talks between the U.S. and North Vietnam, and the first U.S. Emissary to China. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, with Distinction, in 1976.

His wife, Evangeline, was a powerful figure in Washington in her own right and no stranger to diplomatic life. Her father and stepfather both served as British career diplomats and Evangeline and her siblings went on to study languages, politics, and literature, living in over a dozen countries. Once she married Bruce, their life of travel and politics continued, and Evangeline became known for her legendary soirees, impeccable fashion, and expansive array of influential and prominent friendships. "Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis once sent her a note praising 'the bright path you cut through an age where so few people have grace and imagination and the virtues of another time... One was so proud as an American to think that other countries recognized you as our very best" (New York Times).

Condition: Small punctures to the top left corner from removed staple. Unobtrusive pencil notation to the bottom margin, verso.
