National Medal of Science Presented to Paul A. Samuelson by President Bill Clinton

National Medal of Science Awarded to Economist Paul A. Samuelson. The words "National Medal of Science" appear prominently at the top, following the curvature of the bronze medal. The obverse features a kneeling man surrounded by the unifying elements of sky, earth, and sea. He draws a formula with one hand, representing scientific abstraction, and holds a crystal in the other, symbolic imagery for the universal order. Diminutive embossed artist's initials read, "D. De Lue." (Donald De Lue) followed by "Sc." in the lower right portion. The reverse bears the text, "Awarded By / The President / Of The / United States / Of America / To / Paul A. Samuelson / 1996," and is adorned with stars and waves. The rim reads, "©1999 Medallic Art Co. Dayton. NV.-Bronze." The piece has a diameter of approximately 84 mm, a thickness of 6 mm, and a small suspension loop at the top.

In addition to the medal is a plum-and-gold-colored box accompanied by three programs for the presentation of the National Medal of Science and National Medal of Technology, printed with the date "Friday, July 26, 1996." Paul A. Samuelson's name and recipient information appear on the fourth page under "Behavioral / Social Sciences." A gold-colored presidential seal decorates the cover.

Established in 1959 by the 86th Congress as an award honoring those in the physical, biological, mathematical, and engineering sciences, the National Medal of Science would be extended to those in the social and behavioral sciences starting in 1980. Recipients are chosen by a committee of esteemed scientists and engineers appointed specially by the President of the United States. Paul A. Samuelson received this award in 1996 for his many years of foundational contributions to the field of economic science, particularly for his general equilibrium theory and advancements in macroeconomics.

Condition: Very light wear is present. A small scuff is near the knee supporting the man's elbow on the obverse side. The box has some wear on the exterior, and the interior has some cracking. A sticker on the box's lid reads, "#8." The programs have minimum wear.
