Description

Abraham Lincoln: Colorful Campaign Banner. This possibly unique linen banner measures 4" x 22" and has an unusual horizontal format. The name "Lincoln" is inscribed in bold, ornamental letters within the central portion, flanked on either side by American flag designs. The lettering exactly matches that seen on a similar Lincoln & Hamlin banner with eagle recently sold by Richard Withington in New Hampshire. This example is finished on the top, bottom and right side, with a small amount of selvedge on the left. It was probably meant to be attached to a pole and carried in a parade or hung from the framework of a speaker's platform. The fabric, stitching, design and format are all consistent with the 1860 election. There is light, even toning and soiling, but no stains or serious defects. It has been archivally matted and framed under Plexiglas.
