Incredible Set of Correspondence Addressed to General Omar Bradley from Three Allied Officers Discussing Pivotal Wartime Events

Group of Three World War II-Dated Letters from George C. Marshall, Sir Harold Alexander, and Bernard L. Montgomery to General Omar Bradley. Three print photographs of Marshall, Alexander, and Montgomery accompany the lot. Includes:

Harold R. Alexander Typed Letter Signed. One page, 4.375 x 7 inches, "Headquarters, Allied Armies in Italy;" June 25, 1944. Shortly after Alexander's defeat of the Nazis in Italy and three weeks after D-Day, British General Alexander congratulates Bradley on his recent victory at the Battle of Cherbourg. With "Personal file" in pencil at the upper margin. It reads, in part: "...It has been a good party and I wish you had been here with us, but you seem to be having a pretty good party of your own and I look upon your cutting off the Cherbourg Peninsula as a first-class victory. May I offer you my very heartiest congratulations on the able way you have handled the battle." Signed, "H.R. Alexander."

[Together with:] Bernard L. Montgomery Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 6.5 x 8 inches, "Tac Headquarters, 21st Army Group;" December 4, 1944. Field Marshal Montgomery writes to General Bradley just three days before meeting with him and Supreme Allied Commander Eisenhower at Maastricht. He writes, in part: "...I am much looking forward to a meeting with you and Ike on Thursday: at Maastricht I understand." Signed,"B.L. Montgomery." Eisenhower clashed with Montgomery at the meeting over his proposal to move the 21st Army Group and Bradley's 12th United States Army Group north of the Ardennes. This left General Patton's army in the south and in a fortunate position to respond to the German attack at Bastogne less than two weeks later during the Battle of the Bulge.

[And:] George C. Marshall Typed Letter Signed. One page, 7 x 9 inches, Washington, D.C.; December 25, 1944. The newly minted five-star General of the Army Marshall writes to Bradley during the fierce fighting of the Battle of Bulge. He writes, in part: "...I am writing this on Christmas Day while we are watching the progress of the measures taken to thwart the German offensive effort on your front. I hope that the worst will be over when you receive this. Needless to say, you have my complete confidence, the more so in these difficult days..." Signed, "G. C. Marshall."

Condition: Two holed for filing at top edge with dried adhesive to verso, presumably from prior mounting. Pencil notation to versos. Minute scattered soiling. From the Melvin "Pete" Mark, Jr. Collection
