Description
Stephen F. Austin Signed Texian Loan. One partially printed page, 7" x 8" (sight), New Orleans; January 11, 1836. Certificate number 591, recording a loan from James M. McCulloch & Co. to the Government of Texas for $320 in exchange for 8% interest per annum over five years, or land in Texas at the rate of 50 cents per acre. Signed, "S.F. Austin." Also signed by Branch T. Archer and William H. Wharton. Matted and framed with a hand-colored engraving of Austin to the overall size of 19.25" x 25.25".Desperate to raise funds for the Texas Revolution, Stephen F. Austin traveled to New Orleans in January 1836 with Branch T. Archer and William H. Wharton as Commissioners of the Republic of Texas. Austin, Archer, and Wharton gathered a large group of wealthy potential investors at the Bishop's City Hotel to persuade them to aid their cause in exchange for the prospect of Texas land at bargain prices. In total, attendees agreed to pledge $200,000, of which representatives from James M. McCulloch & Co. agreed to contribute $10,000. This loan functioned as an immediate advance of that amount. After Austin's success in New Orleans, Texas officially declared its independence on March 2, 1836.
An integral figure in Texas history, Austin played an important role as an advocate for rights in the region for decades prior to the revolution. After independence, he accepted a position as Secretary of State and died only three months later.
Condition: Not examined outside of the frame. The document has heavy toning and appears fragile. Small separations at right and left margin of top horizontal fold. Cut cancellation with triangular portion of document missing at the center, affecting text. All three signatures have light ink blossoming.
