Description
Coahuila y Tejas Sheriff Sale Document for Land Near Gonzales to Alamo Defender Thomas Redd Miller and Signed by Ezekiel Williams and Adam Zumwalt Important Figures in the Texas Revolution. Four pages on a bifolium with Coahuila y Tejas letterhead, 8.5" x 12". Gonzales, October 28, 1834. In English. Docketed on the verso "Original Deed of the Sheriff M. Williams to Thos. R. Miller for 750 Acres of Land."The document details a Sherriff's sale for 750 acres of land near Gonzales, Texas conveyed to Miller by a debt from Silas M. Morris. Morris arrived in DeWitt Colony as part of the Tennessee-Texas Land Company and received title to a league of land in 1831. Morris murdered William Sowell on the streets of Gonzales and was himself murdered by a Shawnee Indian from Arkansas who was a friend of Sowell's.
Thomas Redd Miller was part of the DeWitt Colony and one of the "Old Eighteen" who refused to surrender the "Come and Take It" cannon to the Mexican Army. He marched into the Alamo on March 1, 1836 as one of the 32 Gonzales rangers where he was killed on March 6.
The document is also signed by Ezekiel Williams who served as the first alcalde and later judge of the DeWitt Colony. Arguably, the first battle of the revolution was fought on William's land, he being one of the "Old Eighteen" who refused to surrender the "Come and Take It" cannon to the Mexicans.
Adam Zumwalt participated in the battle of Salado Creek where he helped force General Adrian Woll's Mexican Army into retreat. Much more research is available on The Handbook of Texas website.
Condition: Lightly toned, more so in the folds with two small holes in the intersection of the central folds. Otherwise, a bright, legible document. Very good.
