Description
David Crockett Autograph Document Signed. One page, 8" x 3.5"; no place; September 2, 1829. Crockett writes out a receipt for payment received for his court testimony. In full: "2 Sept 1829. Recd of John Eubanks full Satisfaction for two days attendance as a witness in a suit where John Eubanks was plaintiff & William James Defendant. David Crockett." Matted and framed with an engraving of Crockett to an overall size of 14.75" x 16.75". Not examined out of the frame.Crockett was serving his second term as congressman from Tennessee at the time he wrote this receipt, though it is likely that it was written in Tennessee. John Eubanks was a longtime associate of Crockett and Crockett would even serve as security for loans obtained by Eubanks. Crockett served a third term in Congress in 1833 but was defeated for re-election. Days after that defeat in 1834, Crockett met one last time with his Tennessee constituents and delivered a short speech. "I put the ingredients in the cup pretty strong," he wrote in his autobiography, "I concluded my speech by telling them that I was done with politics for the present, and that they might all go to hell, and I would go to Texas." Then he and his rifle Betsey left "to give the Texians a helping hand." He was killed doing just that at the Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
Condition: Smoke damage, foxing, and paper loss along the left side affecting a few words but well away from Crockett's signature. Foxing and toning throughout. Frame has light scratches and nicks at top right corner.
Reference: David Crockett, A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett, of the State of Tennessee. Philadelphia: E. L. Carey and A. Hart, 1834.
