[James "Jim" Bowie]. Two Ledger Sheets For Monies Owed to John Goodman & Co., 1827-1831. One ledger sheet measures 8" x 7" and contains ledger entries for drafts from John Goodman & Co. totaling $1,375.74, including interest. The page is dated January 1, 1831, New Orleans.

The second ledger is two pages on a bifolium, 8" x 9.75", dated April 22, 1831, New Orleans. It lists items such as flannels, linen, hose and mosquito bar. The total amount on this ledger is $1,195.96.

The Bowie brothers spent several years in New Orleans plying both legal trades and the slave trade. When they left Louisiana in 1831 they sold their plantation and slaves for $90,000. James and his brother Rezin, were sued by John Goodman & Co. in Adams County, Mississippi, the latter seeking restitution of $18,000.

Condition: Light toning to paper, smoothed fold creases, otherwise bright and legible. Minor separations and offsetting along bifolium crease. Pencil notations to third page of the bifolium.
