Description
USA Naval Letter and Map from 2nd Class Fireman Rodney Chipp Discussing the Capture of the John Gilpin. Six pages of bifolia, 7.75" x 9.75", "Mississippi River above Baton Rouge" [USS Katahdin]; May 20 to 27, 1862. Chipp writes to his brother Joseph "Deyo" Chipp over a series of days notifying him about their passage beyond the Forts following the battle, the capture of the Confederate schooner John Gilpin, and their orders to sail to Vicksburg. During this period, the Katahdin was heavily involved in convoying ships up and down the Mississippi River to bolster the strength of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. Chipp included an intricate map detailing the Katahdin's path during the Battles of Jackson and St. Philip. It is written diary-style with entries spanning several days. It reads in part:"...We anchored between the Forts and I had a good look at them from the Mast Head. It is really a wonder to me how we ever got past. I will send you a diagram of them and then you can see for yourself what we had to pass...we picked up a Rebel Deserter yesterday (the 21st) he says that there is about 200 Rebel Boats up Red River we will take him to the Commodore and likely we will be sent up to take them. I hope so for that will give us some more prize money. We have now got quite a little coming, we get $20 for every prisoner taken and then besides there is the Schooner John Gilpin which the Katahdin took when we was coming up to New Orleans...2 steamers came down tonight and report the fleet up near Vicksburg, the Rebels have a number of Batteries there and mean to give us Fits that is if they can...They say that everything is fair in love and war and as I suppose it was fair for the Commodore to order us to Vicksburgh again where we have got a little fighting to do..."
A postscript in pencil from May 27th informs his brother they were 6 miles below Vicksburg. Several newspaper clippings containing poetry accompany the lot.
Condition: Smoothed folds.
