Description

William H. Emory. Map of Texas and the Country Adjacent: Compiled in the Bureau of the Corps of Topographical Engineers [sic], from the best Authorities. For the State Department. Under the Direction of Colonel J.J. Abert. Chief of the Corps; by W. H. Emory, 1st Lieut. T. E. War Department 1844. 22 x 14 ¼ inches (sight), [Washington]. Engraved by William J. Stone. Texas is outlined in faint red, with a listing of statistics and populations at lower left. Matted and framed to an overall size of 28 ½ x 21 ½ inches.

This is the smaller issue of Emory's map which was made for use by the United States Senate during negotiations for the annexation of Texas and is the first U.S. Government map showing Texas as a contained unit. The Republic of Texas is drawn with the boundary claims of the Texas Congress of 1836, and includes portions of present-day New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma and Wyoming. The Rio Grande runs along the Southern and Western boundaries.

Streeter lists this issue in his bibliography noting that it is "on smaller scale, and with slight varying title" (Engeneers is misspelled). There is no order given as to which issue was printed first.

Condition: Flattened folds and a few spots of foxing. Light wear at some of the folds; offsetting on the area of the cartouche. Not examined out of the frame.

Reference: Streeter 1543B.
