Sept. 1782 [Signed] Anthy. Wayne BG."

In February of 1781, General George Washington ordered Brigadier General Wayne (1745-1796) to the Southern theatre of the Revolutionary War. He was in Virginia when British General Cornwallis surrendered to Washington at Yorktown, Virginia, on October 19, 1781. After Yorktown, Wayne was sent to South Carolina and to Georgia. After British forces evacuated Georgia in July of 1782, Wayne moved into South Carolina, where he was encamped when he issued this passport. The following December, British troops departed from Charleston and Wayne and his forces took control of the city. A year later, in October 1783, Congress promoted Wayne to the rank of major general. During George Washington's presidency, Wayne was appointed Commander in Chief of the U.S. Army to confront Native American tribes in the Northwest Territory.
