Description

[Salem Witch Trials]. Nehemiah Jewett Autograph Endorsement Signed "Neh. Jewett". One page, 11.5" x 14.75" (sight), Essex, Massachusetts; February 28, 1703. A land grant in which Joseph Younglove and his wife Jane "Hath granted...unto Isaak Jewit of the said Ipswich, Blacksmith...a parcel of Marsh Land in quantity the full measure of two acres..." Signed with their markets by Mr. and Mrs. Younglove and witnessed by John Kimball, Edward Chapman and Samuel Chapman. The land grant is endorsed at bottom by justice Nehemiah Jewett, dated July 9, 1708. Document is framed to the overall size of 13.5" x 17".

Nehemiah Jewett (1643 -1720) was an important legal figurehead in Essex County, having written a great deal of the local legislation for the area. In 1689, he was elected to serve on the Massachusetts General Court, where he served until his death in 1720. He also served as Speaker of the House in 1693-64 and 1701, and provided compensation during this period to those injured or affected by the Salem Witch Trials.

Condition: Flattened folds, with some separations and paper loss at intersections and some folds; this affects a small amount of the text near the top of the document. Toning throughout, a bit darker at the folds, with some minor soiling.
