Noah Webster. A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. Hartford and New-Haven: Sidney's Press, 1806.

12mo (in sixes). Contemporary sheep, spine ruled in gilt and with gilt-lettered red morocco lettering piece; quarter morocco slipcase.

FIRST EDITION. The first appearance of Webster's "American" spelling, which preceded his unabridged Dictionary, printed in 1828. 7,000 copies of this edition were produced at a price of $1.50. With a document signed being a certificate (No. 4) for "one share, being the one hundreth [sic] part, of the property and interest in Union School House..." SIGNED BY NOAH WEBSTER as Chairman of the Trustees, New-Haven, January 20, 1802.

Condition: Rebacked with original spine laid down; lettering piece scuffed obscuring text. Tape residue to hinges (seemingly where once hastily reinforced) and now with expert archival reinforcement; FTC rubber stamp to front pastedown filled-in in ink; some ink notations, drawings, and signatures to front free endpaper; some foxing and pale spotting to text throughout, with scattered staining. Signed document creased along old folds with small reinforcement in top margin recto, docketed three times on verso.
