Description
[Al Hirschfeld, artist]. William Saroyan. Harlem as seen by Hirschfeld. New York: The Hyperion Press, [1941]. Limited to 1,000 copies, of which this is number 755, additionally inscribed and signed with an original drawing by Al Hirschfeld. The inscription reads, "To Ernie, one of my oldest friends / and Joe, one of my favorite comedians - / Al - HIRSCHFELD - 12/21/42." The inscription is to comedian Joe Besser, of The Three Stooges, and his wife, Ernestine Besser, "Ernie." Folio. With 24 mounted color lithographs and in-text illustrations. Publisher's color pictorial cream-colored cloth, stamped in brown. Brown endpapers, all edges trimmed. Laid-in is an over-sized birthday card in crayon to Joe, signed "Penny & Roy."Condition: Minor soiling and scuffing to cloth, joints starting. Minor thumbsoiling to textblock, some offsetting and toning, minor staining from glue mounts. Very good.
