Charles Dickens. Bleak House. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1853. First edition. Octavo. xvi, 624 pages. Frontispiece, vignette title-page (later issue, undated, accounted for in Smith) and thirty-eight additional inserted plates, including the ten "dark" plates. Light brown publisher's cloth; stamped in blind on front and back; in gilt and blind on spine. Edges rough-trimmed. Housed in custom mustard yellow clamshell with spine stamped in gilt. Some fading to backstrip and hinges; regular shelf wear to extremities; light bumping to edges and corners; tiny spots of red and black soiling on front and back, with some rubbing to cloth. Evidence of repairs to inner hinges. Softening to edges and corners of text block. Occasional marginal foxing throughout text block, particularly on plates; some offsetting opposite illustrations. Mild soiling and shelf wear to clamshell. Previous owner bookplate on front pastedown. Very good. Gimbel A131; Smith 10. From the Collection of Jerome P. O'Connor.
