William Paley. The Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy. London: Printed for R. Faulder, 1785.4to (268 x 217 mm). Half-title. Contemporary russet morocco, covers with single gilt fillet border, smooth spine gilt-ruled into seven panels, green morocco lettering-piece in one, a repeated central gilt device in the rest, board edges with a single gilt fillet, turns in gilt in a simple Greek-key roll, edges yellow stained.
FIRST EDITION. "Paley was educated at his father's school in Giggleswick and at Christ's College, Cambridge, of which he became a tutor in 1768. His lectures on moral philosophy impressed the university, and when Paley married and retreated to the country rectory he set to work to enlarge and publish them. They appeared in 1785 as Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy. The book was an instant success" (PMM). His later writings were enormously influential, and represent the epitome of 18th-century theological reasoning, providing "the most effective statement of the external evidence for Christianity ever written" (PMM). The present volume includes much secular material, such as chapters on property and contracts, oaths and wills, civil liberty, constitutional government, and crime and punishment.
Condition: Minor wear to joints and extremities; scrape on lower board; minor rubbing. Minor pale spotting to endpapers, but internally very fresh. A very handsome copy in a contemporary morocco binding.
