Description
Sean O'Casey. The Plough and the Stars, a Tragedy in Four Acts. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1926.8vo. Publisher's blue paper-covered board, backed in tan cloth, printed paper labels to spine and front board, lower spine with publisher's imprint stamped in blue. Housed in a green cloth slipcase, matching chemise.
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO WELSH PAINTER AUGUSTUS JOHN on the front free endpaper: "To Augustus John / from / Sean O'Casey / with Warm Regards / 27/6/28." ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED ON THE FRONTISPIECE with a humorous inscription below an arrow pointing to the frontispiece portrait: "The Lord hath afflicteth my soul with many sorrows - this is one of them. S O'Casey."
Augustus John (1878-1961) was a well-regarded Welsh painter. He painted the portraits of many notable figures during his lifetime, including W. B. Yeats, T. E. Lawrence, Dylan Thomas, Lord David Cecil, Wyndham Lewis, George Bernard Shaw, and Walter de la Mare. O'Casey sat for John in 1926, the same year the present work was published. It is clear from the frontispiece inscription that the dramatist much preferred John's depiction over that of the image used for the frontispiece.
Condition: Spine sunned and spine label darkened; minor staining to cloth; touch of edgewear. Some offsetting to half-title and rear fly leaf; light offsetting to title page from frontispiece; occasional light spotting throughout.
Provenance: Augustus John (presentation inscription); acquired from House of Books, Ltd., New York, in 1971. From the William A. Strutz Library.
