Description
William Law. A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life. Adapted to the State and Condition of All Orders of Christians. London: Printed for William Innys, 1729.8vo (193 x 118 mm). With 5 pp. publisher's advertisements at end. Contemporary paneled calf, spine gilt-decorated; cloth slipcase.
FIRST EDITION of this influential work. "Authorities as different as Gibbons, Lord Lyttelton and George Whitfield spoke enthusiastically of it. Samuel Johnson attributed to it his first earnest attention to religion. But the most significant testimony is that of John Wesley, who reaped where Law had sown. Writing after they had parted company, he said: 'I will hardly be excelled, if it be equalled, in the English language, either for beauty of expression or for justice and depth of thought'" (PMM).
Condition: Spine a little darkened and rubbed; minor wear to joints and extremities; hinges starting, but holding. Overall, a fine copy, internally clean and fresh.
