Charles Russell. Typescript signed ("C.M. Russell"), with autograph corrections, of his story "Longrope's Last Guard." [c.1927].10 pages, folio and 4to, on thin paper, with numerous pencil corrections, additions and deletions. Housed in a full morocco slipcase.
"Longrope's Last Guard" is the concluding story in Trails Plowed Under (1927), and it makes a fitting end to this book, as the epitome of a cowpuncher's life, with its work, its tragedy, and its strict adherence to duty. It is considered one of the finest stories ever written concerning the cowboy.
It was Russell's habit to dictate to a friend and amanuensis, Percy Raban, who would type the story, then pass it to Russell for correction, as was apparently the case with the present story, the final one in Russell's last story collection. Some of the pages are typed on the verso of sheets of Russell's steer-head emblem stationery, and bear incomplete typed letters dated 1906, so it is likely that the story is of similar date, although not published until considerably later.
Condition: some minor marginal tears; first and last leaves slightly toned and frayed at edges; occasional creasing and soiling; final leaf a little soiled, with a few marginal nicks or tiny holes, and one internal tear affecting a few letters.
